Talking with a friend tonight and I asked her how she was getting on with the guy she was seeing.

“we have consolidated our relationship (i.e. it is now on facebook!)”

I remember the old days when you just told each of your friends as you ran into them that you were in a relationship. These days you announce it to your facebook network. Certainly more efficient but I think I prefer the old way :)

What’s next? Getting your marriage proposal to the homepage of Digg?

I think people need to learn to have relationships the good old fashioned way. Honestly, what’s wrong with picking up the phone and talking to someone, or even (god forbid) sending them a letter (or an email).

These social networking sites give you a sense of belonging which often wouldn’t exist in the real world. We had a case of ex-colleagues revealing via Facebook that they were no longer together – does the world really need to know that? Can’t they just keep it private?

And now New Zealand has it’s own version: iYomu

I have made my views plain here. I’m prepared to be called an ‘old-fogey’ on this one – it’s happened twice already this week alone!

I agree with you Skinny, even at my age I’ve never quite understood the whole social networking thing. It strikes me as a way to waste a lot of time with people you barely know. When somebody adds you as a “friend” and you’ve never actually met them you really get a feel for how shallow it all is.

I signed up for facebook just to see what the deal was and, to be honest, I’ve been pretty unimpressed. Whenever I hear people talking about it I’m not hearing about how it had a real world use, more that it provided some temporary amusement and that was it.

Thanks for the comment,

Oh JD…the irony that it was just your facebook invitation to add you as a “friend” even though we have never met is just too funny.

How’s it going? Looks like things are going well for you…we’ll meet up one day I’m sure hehe.
